I've stuck with my 2014 resolution of living for the moment, and have changed a number of things this year due to focusing on the present rather than the future. I'm still a reflector though, so the end of year blog post is one thing I have decided to continue. This is my seventh year of doing these annual reviews now - you can see previous ones for 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. I haven't blogged much in 2014. I've been spending more of my free time focusing on other areas of my life and have learnt a lot...

I've been working for CILIP in my part-time secondment role for the Future Skills project for a couple of months now and we're making good progress. I've had a number of people ask questions about where things are at and what will be happening when, as well as people wanting to provide feedback to help shape the support for the new Professional Registration. I thought it would therefore be worthwhile to share where we're up to at this point, what else will be done, and where you can help. Julie and myself first worked on the assessment criteria, and have refined...

I've recently started a part-time secondment to CILIP to work on their Future Skills Project. You may already be aware of the project, which has been working on the recommendations from the Defining our Professional Future report to review the CPD offering: The Future Skills Project is reviewing CILIP’s qualifications to ensure every member gets the recognition they deserve from their employers and society for a unique suite of highly valuable, relevant and endurable skills. This review has created the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB), the revised model for delivering Accreditation of academic and vocational qualifications and the suite of CILIP...

My three year term on the CILIP West Midlands committee has come to an end (two years as Marketing Officer, one year as Chair), and I only have a few months left chairing the ALA NMRT Online Discussion Forum committee, so I thought it would be a good time to reflect on my experiences and dispel some myths about chairing committees I've come across during my time as chair. [caption id="attachment_2474" align="alignright" width="300"] Only businessmen over 50 can join committees[/caption] Myth 1: You have to have X years of experience within the profession to chair a committee Until I joined a committee I...

I've recently submitted my CILIP Chartership portfolio and thought it would be worthwhile to share my experiences - what I liked, what I disliked, what I plan to continue, and my advice to others. First a brief overview of my process: October 2011 - initial investigation into Chartership (discussions on Twitter and in person), found a mentor willing to mentor me virtually. November 2011 - attended a one day Chartership course hosted by CILIP Career Development Group West Midlands. December 2011 - registered for Chartership and set up wiki for progress reporting and mentor communication. Created first version of PPDP (Personal Professional Development Plan). January-August...

I've always been interested in knowing more about the governance of professional organisations such as Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and American Library Association (ALA). I like to know how decisions are made and the structure of the organisation so that I can work out where I best fit and how I can help move things forward. I've been involved in the following ways so far to help me begin to get my head around this: Organised and chaired the first CILIP Election Hustings in November 2010 (on behalf of CILIP West Midlands) Attended CILIP AGM 2011 Been involved in committee...

Yesterday I attended my first CILIP West Midlands branch committee meeting at Birmingham Central Library (where I must investigate sometime, can't believe I've never been in before!). I'm the new Marketing Officer for the branch which I'm really excited about. Marketing in the library and information sector is becoming increasingly more important at the moment, particularly with budget cuts, and I know from my own experience that many in CILIP (Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals) are unaware of some of the benefits available to them as members. There is also a large number of information professionals who are not...

A couple of weeks ago I attended my first CILIP Branch and Groups (BNG) event on behalf of CILIP West Midlands branch. The events are held throughout the year by Kathy Ennis and Lindsay Rees-Jones from CILIP Membership Support Unit. This event was titled “Marketing: getting your message out”; many of the delegates were responsible for marketing within their branch/group. It was my second visit to CILIP HQ, although I still needed my Google Maps app to navigate London and find my way from Euston station! There were around 15 delegates, and it was good to have the opportunity to discuss...

I met Kathy Ennis from CILIP at the New Professionals Conference earlier in summer and she asked a few of us from the day if we could also speak at the CILIP Graduate Open Day. The theme of the day is marketing yourself, which was also the message in my talk at New Professionals Conference, so I was happy to accept the invitation to speak. I'll be presenting a similar presentation to before, and will be focusing on using blogging, microblogging and social networking to market yourself and your skills online. As well as a series of presentations, the day...
